The wait is finally over. This Sunday marks a monumental moment in Ikorodu City FC’s history as we step onto the grand stage of the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) for the very first time. Everything is in place: the players are fired up, the coaches are locked in, and the management is all in. But it’s not just about us. It’s about you, the fans, who have stood by us from day one. Your support has fueled our rise, and now, more than ever, we need your energy as we embark on this exciting journey.

We will be taking on Kano Pillars in a thrilling season opener at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina. It is the beginning of something special, and we are ready to make our mark.

Let’s go, Oga Boys!!! The journey starts now, and together, we willl write our own story in the NPFL.

PRE SEASON PROMISE

We head into the new campaign buoyed by an impressive pre-season run that has seen us emerge victorious in five of our last ten outings. The team has demonstrated both resilience and attacking flair, showcasing qualities that will be crucial as we look to make our mark in the season.

Recent results:

  • Remo Stars 1-1 Ikorodu City (ValueJet Cup, group stage)
  • Al Merrikh 1-2 Ikorodu City (ValueJet Cup, group stage)
  • Ikorodu City 1-1 Shooting Stars (ValueJet Cup, group stage)
  • Rivers United 2-3 Ikorodu City (ValueJet Cup, semi-final)
  • Remo Stars 2-1 Ikorodu City (ValueJet Cup, final)
  • Ikorodu City 0-0 Shooting Stars (Gold Cup, pre-season)
  • FC Ebedei 1-0 Ikorodu City (Gold Cup, pre-season)
  • Osun United 2-3 Ikorodu City (Gold Cup, pre-season)
  • Coshen FC 0-1 Ikorodu City (Friendly)
  • Ikorodu City 2-0 Ojodu City (Friendly)

The standout performances came against established sides Rivers United, and Al Merrikh of Sudan. These results, particularly the win over 2021/22 Nigeria Professional Football League champions Rivers United, will instill confidence in the squad.

However, it hasn’t all been plain sailing. A narrow 2-1 defeat to Remo Stars in the ValueJet Cup final and the loss to FC Ebedei served as a reminder of the fine margins at this level. Yet, the manner in which we navigated the pre-season speaks volumes about how competitive we can be as a team.

As the season proper approaches, head coach Bright Ozebagbe will be encouraged by our pre-season form and will hope to translate the promising displays into consistent performances.

TEAM NEWS

Our squad is at full strength, with no injuries ahead of the game against Kano Pillars, giving the coaching staff a complete roster to choose from. Recent additions to the squad have seamlessly integrated into training sessions and are now competing for spots in the matchday lineup. This positive fitness update provides Bright Ozebagbe with numerous options and flexibility in team selection for the game.

KEY NEW SIGNINGS

  • Adio Ganiyu: Watch out for our new signing Adio Ganiyu. The young defender, fresh from captaining Beyond Limits to multiple titles including the NNL 2024 trophy and Viareggio Cup in Italy, could make his competitive debut. Known for his steadfast defending and winning mentality, Ganiyu’s presence could be crucial for us in this game.
  • Tony Obia: Tony Obia, having impressed on loan at Inter Lagos last season in the NNL, joined us from SKE Port Harcourt. Obia has got sharp instincts in front of goal, Obia proved to be a reliable finisher, scoring 15 goals and providing 12 assists in just 27 games for Inter Lagos last season. His 27 goal contributions made him the top scorer and assist provider for Inter Lagos across all competitions. With his knack for finding the back of the net, he could be on the cards for Coach Bright to hurt Pillars.

  • Rivio Ayenmwere: Rivio is an exciting signing who is sure to capture the attention of our fans. He etched his name in history by scoring Sporting Lagos’ first-ever NPFL goal during the 2023-24 season, showcasing his ability to deliver on the big stage. Known for his technical skill and vision, Rivio brings a creative spark to the midfield, offering much-needed depth and versatility. His presence will undoubtedly bring spark for us in this game, giving the team more options and fluidity in the middle of the park.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

A few players will be under the microscope for this one.Their performances could make all the difference in what promises to be a feisty encounter.

  • Waliu Ojetoye

Our captain, whose defensive abilities are undoubtedly unique, also has the ability to pop up with crucial goals, and of course he is a valuable asset. Last season, he chipped in with 5 goals and 5 assists in the NNL, often arriving late into the box to great effect. His leadership will be vital in marshaling the defense and sparking counter-attacks.

  • Tosin Oyedokun

Tosin was our top scorer last season with 10 goals and 4 assists. His vision and passing range are exceptional, allowing him to control the tempo of the game. He’s also adept at pressing high up the pitch, making life difficult for opposing defenders. He’s one who, if he can find space against Pillars’ physical midfield, he could be the difference-maker.

  • Harrison Austin

The left full back became an unlikely goal threat from his position. His 4 goals last season were a welcome bonus, but it’s his defensive work that’s equally impressive. Austin’s reading of the game is excellent, often intercepting passes and snuffing out opposition attacks before they gain momentum. When you talk about delivery from the flank, Austin is also fully weaponized, and will be expected to stretch the Pillars’ defence.

These players will be key to our chances against Kano Pillars. If they can deliver, our opposition could then be having a long day.

OPPOSITION WATCH

It’s been 10 years since Kano Pillars last claimed the NPFL title, but their status as one of Nigeria’s footballing giants remains intact. The club has entrusted their ambitions this season to Usman Abdallah, the tactician who led Enyimba to the 2019 NPFL championship. Renowned for his sharp strategic mind, Abdallah strikes a balance between attacking flair and defensive discipline—a formula that not only delivered league success but also took Enyimba to the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals, where they fell to eventual winners Raja Casablanca.

This game with the four-time NPFL champions will be a formidable test, and with club legend Rabiu Ali still pulling the strings at 43, and bolstered by the arrivals of Zulkifilu Muhammed and Naibe Akpesiri, Kano Pillars promise a thrilling contest. Our players will need to be at their best to meet the challenge ahead.
